What Does Potential Sound Like? CHECKOUT: Smoosh

Loretta Lux - The Book (2003)

What does "potential" sound like? Two indie rockers (ages 11 and 13) from Seattle, Washington suggest the onomatopoeia Smoosh and the've got the credibility to prove it. Writing and performing all of their own songs, Asya and Chloe have created an album called that is technically mature, but retains a young sound of hip prebubescent vocals hopping over concrete beats. Many chalk up their success to the influence of Chloe's drum teacher, John McGerr (now the drummer for Death Cab for Cutie), but there is no question that these girls deserve all the acclaim they recieve. I'd offer the album a gold star or an A+, but hell this is the music business... how about a line of cocaine?

Smoosh - It's Not Your Day to Shine (mp3)

Smoosh - Massive Cure (mp3)

Their quirky claymation video for La Pump may push the kid angle a little too far, but they ARE kids and THEY ROCK! Hopefully they continue on their rock and roll arc and end up as prolific and cracked out as a pair of Keith Richards by age 20. Only originality can be birthed from that kind of torment.

[Smoosh are currently touring the UK with one of my favourites, The Go! Team, and will appear at SXSW 2006 in March for the second time! Buy their album locally (Strictly Discs or B-Sides in Madison) or find it at Insound.]

I think my favorite Loretta photo is the little girl holding a fish next to a bathtub. I love it. Don't forget about Mona Kuhn - she's a great photographer too!
