Heavy Times - Night Swim (mp3): There are only so many things you can say about lo-fi music, and not many of them worth saying. Noise, fuzz, static, garage, grit - and my favourite - experimental. You can say the wailing is vulnerable, the guitars are messy, the drums are apathetic... but none of that really tells you anything about the music. You can say the style emotes beyond any lyrics or structure, something that can be said about much good music, and this time it would actually be pretty true. You could shift the focus to explore the souls who make these sounds, their untrained voices, their beer and dirty fingernails, their oppositional identities. Or you could stick to something you actually know - what allures you - that the same uncleanliness, or at least unpredictability, which repels most is the authenticity that hooks the rest of us.
